Pigs of God 2017 (義民節神豬)

Strangely enough, living in Taoyuan for the past decade, one of the most popular occasions of the year takes place at the end of the summer in the middle of Ghost Month when night markets pop up out of nowhere and the city comes alive with local culture and tradition.

The Mid-Summer Ghost Festival (中元慶典藝術節) seems to me a bit comparable to our 'Canada Day' festivities back at home when the whole community gets together to celebrate, enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere and eat some great food. 

Like local people here in Taoyuan, I have found that after all these years of living here I have made it a tradition of my own to take part in the yearly festivities. The festival always end up being a great time and allows for me to get out with friends, take some photos, enjoy some local culture and good food and meet up with people that I might not have seen for quite a while.

Despite what I see as a great time, there is a dark shadow cast over the entire event thanks to the inclusion of the "Pigs of God Competition" which is viewed both as a cruel form of animal abuse and also as an important historic, cultural and religious activity that should be protected.  

This is my third time to blog about this event and I’m sure that if you have read my previous posts you’ll likely notice a change in the tone for which I've presented it. The reasons for this are simply that my view has ultimately evolved with the times and as I've become more experienced as a blogger, my apprehension to discuss these aspects of culture and religion has started to fade. 

I don’t like to criticize 'culture' and I don’t feel that it is my place as an outsider to actually criticize what the people of Taiwan do in their own country - but a tradition that in normal circumstances (without religion) would not be acceptable to most people has become a horrible spectacle of animal cruelty and has brought Taiwan quite a bit of unfair international condemnation and has also numbed onlookers to the needless animal suffering that takes place in order to celebrate a single night of 'culture' and 'folk-religion'.

My coverage of the 'Pigs of God' event as a photographer and also as a blogger over the past few years is not because I want to drive traffic to my blog or write about something sensational - I want to help people understand that this event is not indicative of Taiwan as a whole and if you educate yourself more about this beautiful island nation that you'd find that its an amazing place to live, study and work and that the people who live here are some of the kindest and friendliest people you'll ever have the chance to meet.

The event is often described by the international media as being ‘mired in controversy’ but locally it has the strange ability to arouse the curiosity of society at large who yearn for a bit of tradition in their hectic lives and is often perceived as a way to connect people to their heritage. 

This means that while there are quite a few people who oppose it, there are others who make sure to visit and do their best to experience the ‘vibrance’ of Taiwanese culture while strangely taking family photos beside the carcass of dead animals stretched out and painted for the world to see. 

The arguments for and against the festival go a little bit like this: Animal Rights Activists argue that this practice is not in line with modern Taiwanese society and that the tradition should cease to exist while supporters insist that it is a traditional aspect of Hakka culture and therefore it should be preserved.

Taiwan is a highly developed country where modernity and tradition are often at odds with each other, so when it comes to events like this groups who support these cultural traditions are often just as vocal as the opposition when their traditions are being targeted.

When I first came to Taiwan there were around five-ten giant pigs put on display per year. Friends tell me that when they were younger there were at least twenty or more. That number has slowly decreased with only three showing the year before last, two last year and two smaller ones this year as well.

I spoke to the director of the Taoyuan Yimin Temple (桃園市平鎮市褒忠祠) and he explained that there are fewer pigs this year due to "environmental concerns" (環保的關係) and the fact that fewer people are willing to raise the pigs nor do they have the space to keep them.

As the conversation about the ‘Pigs of God’ progresses and society learns more and more about the unnecessary suffering these animals endure during their short lives more and more people have started to oppose it - This opposition has put pressure on religious and cultural organizations to come up with new ideas and start making plans to eventually phase out the practice altogether.

Thus far over twelve temples have already stopped the contest and there are future plans for more to eventually put an end to it.

The problem however is that while some temples have 'promised' to put an end to the practice, it seems like they may be backtracking on these promises and ultimately may just keep practicing it until they’re forced to stop.

Before I focus on the negatives of this years event, I think its best to look at the positives and how things have improved over previous years:

  1. The Pigs of God this year were considerably smaller than years past which shows that a little more care was taken not to abuse the animals and overfeed them as much as in years past.
  2. The Taoyuan City Government promoted the usage of “Environmentally Friendly Pigs of God" (環保神豬) which were art displays made to look like pigs and constructed out of recycled products and paraded around town in the same way that the real pigs would be.
  3. The event organizers planned an alternate activity where local people as well as dignitaries as high up as President Tsai Ying-Wen would come and release water lanterns on the eve of the event.

As for the negatives, one of the things that bothers me most about all of this is how much local politicians have latched onto this event as a way to promote themselves. The event was attended by local and national level politicians from each party who mingled with the people.

The winning pig that was on display was either supported or promoted by a local DPP politician who had his flag next to the dead animal and office employees acting as a type of security in front of the pig.

When support for this event not only comes from local cultural and religious organizations but from politicians as well, it means that it is not likely that things are going to change very quickly and that is likely a sour spot for the animal rights activists who have worked tirelessly to help educate society about what is actually going on here.

At this point it seems like there has been a bit of progress and things have been changing for the better - I know that last year I seemed a little more optimistic that the practice would be ending after this year’s festivities, but right now, I can’t really see that happening.

There will be Pigs of God at the Mid-Summer celebrations next year as well.

The Pigs of God (神豬)

The practice of putting giant carcasses of dead pigs known as the "Pigs of God" (神豬) on display as a form of animal sacrifice is a tradition that started with the Hakka people a few hundred years ago here in Taiwan.

 I should add however that animal sacrifice is something that has traditionally been common throughout almost all of the different Chinese ethnic groups. 

While there are valid historic reasons why the Hakka people of Taiwan created such a tradition, the contest that has evolved out of it has become one of those traditional cultural practices that has struggled to stay relevant in modern times due to to societal changes and attitudes towards animal welfare.

To become a “Pig of God”, the animal is typically raised for anywhere between two to four years during which time they are force-fed in much the same way as a goose or duck in France is fed in order to make foie-gras. This allows for the pigs to grow to abnormal proportions with some reaching a final weight nearing almost a thousand kilograms before being slaughtered.

For a bit of clarity - market sized hogs sell when they are at about 250 - 270 pounds (113-122kg) meaning that a “Pig of God” grows to at least 5-6 times the normal size while winning pigs of the past have reached anywhere between 800-900 kilograms making them almost ten times the size of a normal healthy pig.

To achieve such a result the pigs are raised in a way that they are constantly overfed which eventually forces them to become immobile. This lifestyle is extremely unhealthy for the animals as they develop painful bed sores and often suffer from organ failure and various other ailments.

To add to the cruelty involved in raising an over-sized animal like this, Animal Rights groups claim that farmers often force-feed the animals heavy-metals or stones days before the contest takes place in order to achieve a higher final weight.

In the past the pigs would be taken out into the public square in front of the temples to be weighed and publicly slaughtered. This was a gruesome sight and one that I'm glad I've never had to experience.

Foreign media outlets however continue to falsely report that this is still a common practice as the pigs are brought out on forklifts, weighted and they slaughtered in front of cheering crowds.

Pigs of God History

The Pigs of God always attract a huge crowd. 

The origin of the event is a bit difficult to explain, but it is one that coincides with the creation of the original Yimin Temple (義民廟) which was constructed as a place to memorialize Hakka militiamen and patriots who worked together to protect their homes and their families.

The spirit plaque (神位) that was placed in the temple to memorialize the fallen soldiers became known as "Yìmín Yé" (義民爺) and quickly became a community symbol that brought together Hakka people of all walks of life to celebrate their culture, identity and history.

Every year in order to celebrate Hakka culture and the sacrifice of the young soldiers, the Yimin Cultural Festival (義民節) is held in conjunction with Ghost Month festivities (中元節) to honour Hakka ancestors as well as celebrate and promote Hakka culture throughout Taiwan.

The festival, like the Pigs of God has ultimately evolved into something quite different over the years, but the general purpose remains the same.

In the early days of the festival, the community in Hsinpu got together and put on a huge feast to honour Yìmín Yé.

As pork (in addition to chicken and duck) has been one of the most important animals to sacrifice to the gods and has always has been one of the most widely ingredients in Hakka dishes, it was always one of the most predominate features of the feast.

Each year one of the local families would have to raise a pig in order to both offer it up as a sacrifice to the Hakka ancestors and to help feed the community during the feast.

As “Yimin worship” became more predominant and ‘good luck’ was being attributed to paying respect in the temple, the annual feasts gradually became larger as a way to not only show gratitude  but to also show off a families wealth and status in the community.

As mentioned above, the responsibility for raising the pig would ultimately rotate between the prominent Hakka families in order to ensure that each family did its part and that people wouldn't foolishly waste their money when they had such an important responsibility to the community.

This rotation went on for quite some time but soon a competition (of sorts) started between families as the pigs raised for the festival became larger and larger.

Ultimately the size of the pig that was offered up each year started to symbolize the wealth and power of a family meaning that as the years went by the pigs gradually became larger and larger as a show of “face” and local power.

When the problem of "face" comes into these kinds of things in Taiwan, a competition is bound to happen, and in this case, despite the tradition of rotating year-by-year it became expected that even in off-years people would still raise a pig to submit to the competition while at the same time offering gratitude to Yimin Ye.

Thus the Pigs of God competition became a thing.

With this history in mind we can likely agree that the 'Pigs of God Contest' was one that was born out of simple human vanity. This has nothing to do with culture or religion and that is why I believe that aspects of this tradition can continue while the contest should absolutely be put to an end.   

As I mentioned in my introduction, the weekend of this festival is one of my favourite times of the year and is one that I’ve attended pretty much every year since I’ve come to Taiwan.

As the years have passed I stopped looking forward to the ‘sensational’ aspects of the festival and more so towards the coming-together of the local community to celebrate their culture and their heritage.

There are many ways to improve amazing festival while at the same time celebrating Hakka culture and history - I have seen with my own eyes that a lot of these changes are already taking place and that while the ‘Pigs of God' were an important aspect of the past, they are not an important part of the future.

Miracle Terrace (聖蹟亭)

Almost anywhere you go in Taiwan you'll find a shrine of some sort - Shrines are set up on busy city streets, in the middle of the woods, on top of mountains, next to rivers, on farms, in graveyards and on the grounds of factories.

The shrines that you'll find throughout the country each serve a purpose but in most cases, the smaller non-temple variety are set up for individual or small-scale worship, to wish for good luck, good health and of course - wealth!  

The Shengji Terrace (聖蹟亭) or "Miracle Terrace" isn't your typical shrine, its actually quite a unique one - but its importance to the Hakka people of the country has earned it a special place in history and through the efforts of the government and the Hakka Affairs Council, the shrines (which are still left standing) have recently been restored and have become well-preserved sites of historical relevance.

There are only a handful of these "Miracle Terrace" shrines left standing in Taiwan today found predominantly in places where the Hakka people live in abundance. There is one in Shulin (樹林) in New Taipei City, another in Meinong (美濃) in Kaohsiung, another in Pingdong's Fangliao Village (枋寮鄉) and it just so happens that the other two can be found right here in Taoyuan county with one in Longtan Village (龍潭鄉) and the other in downtown Zhongli (中壢). 

The Miracle Terrace shrine is a bit different than what you'd normally expect from a Taiwanese place of worship and given that they are dedicated to literacy and 'ensuring the continued respect to the written word' you would think they would be just as busy as Taoist temples during exam periods, but that isn't the case.

These shrines serve a completely different purpose and derive their significance as cultural relics rather than anything to do with religion. 

The shrines are considered to be a prime example of the Hakka people's dedication and respect for culture and literacy and is said to be a reason why their culture has been able to thrive in Taiwan for several centuries.

Longtan Shengji Terrace (龍潭聖蹟亭)

The shrine in Longtan Village (龍潭鄉) was originally built in 1875, but was renovated and restored in 1892, 1925 and 1979. It is a very simple shrine that doesn't go overboard in the way that most Taoist shrines or temples do. The shrine adheres to the principles of Feng Shui (風水) but also appears to have Japanese-like influence with the front gate and the lamps that surround the shrine - likely remnants of the colonial-era.

The shrine is so simple that it seems more zen-like than anything else you'd commonly see in Taiwan. The shrine is actually so simple that it is quite easy to miss unless you're actually looking for it. 

The terrace part of the shrine is a three-storey oblation furnace that has calligraphy inscribed on three sides with a small opening in the front where you are supposed to place scrap paper with written words on them.

The Longtan shrine has been in the same spot since it was originally built and although the local government has done an excellent job maintaining it and keeping it clean, it was never really promoted as a tourism spot until the completion of the nearby Hakka Culture Museum.

There are now street signs that show visitors to the area how to get to the shrine but if you do visit you'll likely notice that it is empty most of the time even though it is only a short walking distance from the popular Longtan Lake (龍潭大池). 

Zhongli Shengji Terrace (中壢聖蹟亭) 

The shrine in Zhongli (中壢) is actually even more simple than the one found in Longtan and visitors to the city are likely to pass by it thinking that it is just a monument. The terrace consists of a smaller furnace than the one see in Longtan and beside it stands a newly constructed shrine dedicated to the Taoist Earth God (土地公).

The Zhongli shrine recently finished renovations after being covered up for almost a year. The shrine has been in the same spot for almost 150 years but I'm sure that for at least the last three decades or so nobody really knew it was there.

I have to admit that even after a decade of living in this city, I hadn't noticed it until I started doing research on the Longtan shrine.

The shrine was built in 1875 during the Japanese colonial period and despite having a long history in the city and its close proximity to the Zhongli Mazu temple (仁海宮), it wasn't maintained very well.

The shrine was never moved but for at least a decade a pedestrian overpass was built so close to it that the shrine was pretty much hidden from sight. This begs the question - Who had the brilliant idea to build the bridge basically on top of the shrine? 

Over the past few years, the city of Zhongli has undergone an extensive beautification project that will make the city more environmentally friendly as well as attractive to tourists. Small shrines like this Miracle Terrace as well as the Japanese era Police Dorms were included in the beautification plans to promote local culture as well as prepare for the soon to be operational MRT system. 

Fortunately the local government saw the folly in past decisions to disrespect an important cultural monument and decided to include the renovation of the property in the revitalization and renovation plans for the city. The overpass was ultimately removed, the original Earth God shrine relocated and a small park built to give the shrine both the room and the respect it deserves. 

Even though the renovation of the shrine was completed recently and has signage around town directing tourists to it - I doubt the shrine will attract many visitors.

I appreciate the fact that the local government took the effort to preserve a cultural relic like this and also allows for more open space within the city!

At first I thought it was a bit ironic that at a shrine dedicated to respecting literary arts was just a furnace for burning paper. I had thought that the shrine was just an ancient paper shredder of sorts but after a bit of research I found out that these types of furnaces were quite common throughout China and Taiwan with the practice going all the way back to the Tang Dynasty (唐朝) and becoming more popular in the Ming (明朝) and Qing (清朝) Dynasty's. 

It was believed that when students were studying for the Imperial exam that the paper they used to write notes should not be carelessly abandoned or left to rot in a stack of papers in a bedroom. They thought that any paper that contained the written word should be respected and that meant burning it to prevent bad luck or even becoming 'academically cursed' later on in life.  

As I mentioned above, there are only five of these Miracle Terrace's left in Taiwan and they are all found in areas populated predominately by the Hakka people. There are however around twenty-five furnaces for burning paper still standing in Taiwan today. The furnaces which can be translated as "Cherishing Towers" (惜字塔) and are found on school campuses and at temples dedicated to the god of literature (文昌大帝) and even one in the middle of a forest here in Taoyuan's Daxi Village (大溪區).

The Hakka Affairs Council (客家委員會) and local governments have worked together in recent years to preserve the Miracle Terraces and that preservation has been quite successful in the cases of Longtan and Zhongli. The problem for the remaining furnaces which don't fall under the jurisdiction of the Hakka Affairs Council however is a bit more precarious. There are only twenty of these towers left standing and they are not as likely to receive such preferential treatment despite their historical significance. 

All of the furnaces share the same function, but the "Cherishing Towers" are just a simple furnace set up near a school or other random location with no pizazz while as the Miracle Terrace is set up in the form of a shrine with a park around it

If we consider the fact that the Miracle Terrace is a shrine found within a park-like setting that has cultural significance, it is obvious that preserving them is important.

I would hope however that all of these furnaces could be preserved by the government for their historical value and the relationship they have shared with the people of Taiwan for centuries. 

Today these shrines tend to be a little visited monument and you won't find them in guidebooks. Still, the shrines show the Hakka people's respect for literacy and the fact that they are still standing today rather than being bulldozed for some new development shows that the respect for history and literature are still important aspects of Hakka and Taiwanese culture as a whole.

There is very little information about these shrines available in English on the web, so I hope that this post helps introduce a bit of Taiwan's history that not very many people understand.

If you are in either Longtan or Zhongli, check these shrines out for a few minutes. You don't need a lot of time, but they are quite beautiful and you can learn a lot.

Since I started this blog a little over two years ago, one of the most popular posts has been the one about the Pigs of God festival. There isn't a wealth of information available in English about this cultural tradition, so I've always figured that the post was interesting to those who might be curious about what exactly goes on with this event after seeing something about it in the news or on social media.

My post last year was meant to explain the ritual and give a bit of the cultural context to people overseas who don't really understand what's going on but feel triggered somehow and end up condemning the people of Taiwan when they see sensationalistic news and photos about this festival. 

With this post, I plan to expand upon the information I provided about the ritual last year as well as provide some updates and personal opinion. I've attended this festival pretty much every year for the last decade, so I hope that after reading this you'll understand a bit more about this cultural tradition through my experience. The purpose of this post is to attempt to offer a balanced look at this centuries-old cultural practice and not to sensationalize things the way the foreign media does.

I have covered this festival as a photographer for several years and while I personally don't agree with the practice, I do my best to understand the cultural tradition that has inspired it and generally keep my opinion to myself. I believe that my job as a photographer is to use my camera to show people what is happening and thus letting them decide for themselves how they feel. As an expat living in Taiwan, I don't think it is really my place to tell people what they should and shouldn't do and even though I have issues with animal abuse and animal sacrifice, I have to say that attending the event is always an interesting experience and offers a great perspective into the local culture.

Typically you can see the Pigs of God show up during the Hakka people's Yimin Festival (義民文化節) or (very ironically) during birthday celebrations for Master Qingshui (清水祖師), a Buddhist monk enshrined at the Qingshui Zushi Temple (清水祖師廟) in New Taipei City's Sanxia District.

The pigs are raised for at least two years and during that time they are force-fed in much the same way as a goose or duck in France is fed in order to make foie-gras which allows for the pig to grow to abnormal proportions. There are reports that a few days before the event takes place over-zealous farmers will force feed heavy metals to the pig to make its final weight much heavier in order to win. I'm not going to dispute that this kind of cruelty takes place but I also think that there is a lot of negativity and false information spread around to discredit the festival.

While most religious groups that have practiced this type of animal sacrifice have put an end to the practice, Yimin Temple (義民廟) and Sanxia's Qingshui Zushi Temple (清水祖師廟) are the last to carry the torch. Both temples have had to tone things down though and the Qingshui temple has promised to end the practice by 2017 and find another way to carry on the tradition in an attempt to placate both the traditionalists and those who stand up for animal rights.

Last year, the winning pig weighed around 840kg (1680台斤) and this year the sole entry into the contest was around 675kg (1350台斤) showing a bit of a decrease from years past. For a bit of clarity - market sized hogs sell when they are at about 250 - 270 pounds (113-122kg) meaning that the Pig of God this year grew at least 5-6 times the normal size while winning pigs of the past have reached anywhere between 800-900 kilograms making them almost ten times the size of a normal healthy pig.

Despite knowing all of this, after the pig is slaughtered there are long lines of people lined up to get a piece of the freshly butchered hog that is freely distributed to the people in attendance.

The historical nature of the is event is a bit hard to understand and (even if you speak Mandarin) there aren't a lot of resources on the Internet to really explain why it all started but after several hours of research I was turning up blanks. So, I decided to just ride my scooter over to Hsinchu's Hsinpu village (新埔鎮) and visit the largest and most important Yimin Temple to get the answers I needed. 

The origin of the event shares a history with the formation of Yimin temple itself - The temple is a religious and cultural centre for the Hakka people but it's purpose is to memorialize the patriotic Hakka militiamen who worked together to protect their homes and later quell several rebellions (林爽文事件及戴潮春事件) against the Qing Emperor in the late 1700s. 

After each rebellion, the deceased members of the Hakka volunteer army were brought back and buried in the area where the temple now stands. For their heroism and loyalty to the Qing empire, the emperor sent plaques in their honour to thank them for their service and their sacrifice. The temple was ultimately built to remember these heroes but also to give the Hakka people a place to worship and celebrate their culture.

The deceased militiamen were honoured with a spirit plaque (神位) in the newly built temple which became known as "Yìmín Yé" (義民爺) and thus became the reason why the Hakka people celebrate the Yimin Cultural festival (義民節) every summer. In the early days of the festival there would be a huge feast to celebrate the deceased heroes and this feast always consisted of pork because it was one of the most important ingredients used in Hakka cuisine and also readily available to the people of that era.

This doesn't really explain why the Pigs of God became a competition though - This came years later when a young Hakka boy from Hsinpu who wanted to pass the Imperial Exam (科舉) visited the temple to pray to Yimin Ye to ask for a blessing in passing the test. When he eventually passed the test and returned to Taiwan he went back to the temple to thank Yimin Ye for help in passing the test. As a way of thanking the 'Yimin' his family prepared a huge feast at the temple for all the people to come and celebrate his achievement. During the feast it was decided that from then on it would become a tradition for a large pig to be raised in honour of Yimin Ye and to be presented during the Yimin Festival. The responsibility for raising the pig would ultimately rotate between the prominent Hakka families in order to ensure that each family did its part and that people wouldn't foolishly waste their money when they had such an important responsibility.

This rotation went on for quite some time but ultimately a healthy competition started between families as the pigs raised for the festival became larger and larger each year. A large pig became a symbol that a family was quite well off, so farmers started doing whatever they could to make the pig they had to raise grow as large as possible. When the problem of "face" comes into these kinds of things in Taiwan, a competition is bound to happen, and in this case, it was to be expected that even in off-years people would still raise a pig to submit to the competition while at the same time offering gratitude to Yimin Ye.

Basically things got out of hand because of a drunken conversation over a feast of amazing food.

In the history of the world this isn't the worst thing that could have happened because of a drunken conversation - but I think knowing the history gives me hope for the future - A future without the Pigs of God! 

If the whole point of this was to have a feast and get together with the community, there are ways to do that which don't require giant pigs. Instead of raising a giant pig, the money that is spent on feeding such a giant animal for two years would probably be better spent on preparing an actual meal of amazing Hakka food for people to enjoy! 

There are many ways to improve amazing festival while at the same time celebrating Hakka culture and history - I have seen with my own eyes that a lot of these changes are already taking place and that while the Pigs of God were an important aspect of the past, they are not an important part of the future.
